in my experience 3 - 5 social sites are just about right to maintain. Anything more requires a lot of time. I'm set with Xing, LinkedIn, Facebook and Delicious. We encouraged Main Sequence to build a link to social networks, so candidate and client details stay up to date. 
I would also encourage anybody to use the groups option and be active. I have build some good relationships through knowledge exchange.
